KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Harapan has failed the people six months after the general election - especially DAP which received 95% of Chinese support - says Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon (pic).

The MCA deputy president said DAP had even used their new-found powers to attack MCA and the Chinese community.

DAP secretary general and Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said last week that he would only give matching grants to Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) if it cut ties with MCA.

Set up and run by MCA, TAR UC had received matching grants from the government every year, starting in 1969.

It received a total of RM1.012bil matching grants over the last 50 years, including RM30mil under Budget 2018.

The monies are used for operating expenditure and that had enabled TAR UC to keep tuition fees affordable to the low and middle income groups.

Dr Mah said the absence of the matching grants might trigger a fee hike, making it hard for the low and middle income groups.

Started off as Tunku Abdul Rahman College in 1968, it was upgraded to TAR UC in 2013 and had produced some 200,000 graduates to date, 95% of them are Chinese from low and middle income background.

Mah chided Lim, pointing out that he used to criticise MCA for not getting more funds for TAR UC, not doing enough for the Chinese schools and failing to get the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) recognised while he was not in the government.

The people, Dr Mah said, had gone all out to vote in Pakatan Harapan with the hope of getting a better life but it turned out otherwise.

"They (Pakatan) always have excuses for not delivering and also put the blame on the past regime.

"What they said are not true most of the time," said Dr Mah when opening the MCA Youth annual general assembly here Saturday morning (Dec 1).

In another development, Dr Mah said the MCA central delegates would deliberate and decide whether MCA would remain in Barisan Nasional or leave the coalition during the MCA annual general assembly here on Sunday.

Barisan which went into GE14 with 13 component parties is now down to four parties - Umno, MCA, MIC and myPPP.

Umno, MCA and MIC ( Alliance) won independence for the country in 1957 and the coalition was renamed Barisan Nasional in 1974 and expanded to include other parties.

Barisan held federal power for 61 years before losing to Pakatan Harapan in GE14.
