Press statement by MCA Religious Harmony Bureau Chairman Dato’ Sri Ti Lian Ker

Don’t just slam MCA & China Ambassador for shoring up ties, condemn the Opposition too for the same efforts

It is regrettable that veteran diplomat Datuk Dennis Ignatius rather than building international relations, deems it fit to destroy bilateral relations by deliberately targeting the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China HE Dr Huang Huikang of actively touring the country, frequently accompanied by MCA or UMNO politicians, donates tens of thousands of Ringgit to Chinese schools and channels hundreds of thousand of Ringgit in the form of aid and scholarships (Free Malaysia Today, 4 March 2017).

As a diplomat, and as a civil servants, he should be wiser to be apolitical, rather than to indulge in politicking, what more on an international scale.

He should be welcoming these funds from the China government as it shows they have confidence in our education system, besides seeing the potential and thus want to raise up Malaysia’s human capital and talent.

It is also hypocritical of Datuk Ignatius to conveniently ignore that other governments also offer scholarships to Malaysians or that they sponsor international exchange programmes. Japan offers Monbukagakusho scholarships, the United Kingdom has Chevening scholarships while many Malaysians have benefited from Singapore’s well known ASEAN scholarship.

It is further hypocritical of him that he completely ignores the all Malaysian Chinese entourage from DAP which recently paid a courtesy call unto Dr Huang, of which DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng voiced his support for China’s Belt and Road Initiative (OBOR) after several DAP leaders had condemned MCA for encouraging Malaysians to seize opportunities available from OBOR.

On 22 July 2015, Guan Eng announced that China had appointed Wu Jun as Consul General for Penang. He said that the appointment “will not only promote trade relations between Malaysia and China but also strengthen our relationship between the people of China and Penang (The Star, 22 July 2017).

A few months ago, Vice President Tian Chua led a delegation of his party’s Chinese leaders to meet Dr Huang as well.

It is sheer double standards of Datuk Ignatius to not condemn the Opposition building up bilateral diplomacy with China but berates Dr Huang, MCA and UMNO on the same bilateral ties.

MCA stands above political affiliation. If the Opposition is successful in constructing ties with China or any other foreign government which will bring in more technological transfer, FDIs, tourists, foreign students, MCA will support such efforts as ultimately, all Malaysians will benefit.

Datuk Denis’ unsavoury words for indicates he has his own political agenda to tarnish the image of Dr Huang, MCA and UMNO.
