Tun Mahathir ignores coalition’s Manifesto one week after coming into power

Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has betrayed the Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto when he announced himself as the next Education Minister.

Note that it is only one week after PH came into power and they are already ignoring their own manifesto. PH’s manifesto declared in their 12th Promise (page 48) to limit the Prime Minister’s term of office and restructure the Prime Minister’s Department, and it is in this promise that they include that the Prime Minister shall not simultaneously hold any other ministerial posts.

The party president of Amanah and vice chairman of PH, Mat Sabu has also himself on March 26th declared that to circumvent corruption and power abuse, PH pledged that the Prime Minister cannot wield any other ministerial portfolios   (http://www.sinchew.com.my/node/1739774  .

Pakatan Harapan had hammered on the idea of reforms to win over voters, yet immediately undermined themselves within a week time in power. I believe this weakens public confidence in the new government, raising the question of how many promises will they continue to break.

The rationale that PH provided behind the 12th Promise is that the consolidation of power by a single man encourages corruption, nepotism and power abuse. I want to know how they will justify going back on their words regarding this.

The PH-led government needs to review this declaration; it needs to be a governance by virtue.

Members of Pakatan, especially the ones from DAP and Amanah who fought hard and well to limit the amount of power a Prime Minister can have,  should stop Tun Mahathir from breaking their parties’ principles. Show us all that after coming into power, you remain steadfast in guarding your principles and integrity.
