Liow: Malaysia Seeks Re-election to then Council of IMO

I am honoured to represent Malaysia at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) upcoming 30th Regular Session of The International Maritime Organization (IMO) General Assembly in London, United Kingdom which will take place from 27 November – 6 December 2017.

Having been an active participant and supporter of IMO’s initiatives over the past decade, we have therefore submitted our candidacy for re-election to the Council of IMO during the Assembly. We hope to continue playing a role in creating safer seas and sustainable maritime transport for the global maritime industry.

As one of the leading players in ASEAN’s growing maritime sector, Malaysia is strongly committed to playing our part in enhancing the standards of safety and security, not to mention promoting greater international cooperation among maritime nations. We firmly believe that this will lay the foundation for fresh opportunities and socio-economic benefits for all IMO member states.

Indeed, as a specialized agency of the United Nations, IMO is the global standard setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. Its main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented. Malaysia is focused in upholding IMO's international standards and regulations as well as supporting its capacity building and technical cooperation programs.

At present, IMO comprises a total of 172 member states and 3 observer states. Malaysia has been an IMO member since 1971 and have served the IMO Council for 6 consecutive terms since we were first elected to the Council for the 2006/2007 term during the 2005 General Assembly.
