Press statement by MCA Vice President Senator Dato’ Sri Ti Lian Ker

DAP should not embolden racists or bigots by endorsing their threat of May 13th as the reason that ICERD cannot be ratified

Lim Kit Siang is lame when he quoted the threat of another May 13th racial riot as the reason to justify DAP’s caving in to extremists in the issue of ICERD (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) ratification. Lim Kit Siang and DAP failed to convince their partners to deliver on their election promises.

This is despite the fact that the Prime Minister has openly agreed to adopt and ratify ICERD in the United Nations General Assembly. The Cabinet has also endorsed the ratification of ICERD but sadly they have caved in and conceded defeat to racist and bigots.

Regrettably Lim and DAP have failed to uphold their promises of a New Malaysia but instead, having to stoop down to acknowledge and give credence to the threat of another May 13th  racial riot as the basis of their U-turn is abhor-able.

Malaysians looking towards a New Malaysia would expect DAP to be steadfast in their political will; to stand up for principles, safeguard the rights of any individual from harm and danger and pursue these racist and bigots by upholding the rule of law. DAP which is now in power with a big mandate should have insisted that authorities pursue the racist and bigots who have trespassed the laws by making racial threats and threatening violence.

Malaysians and all other residents, tourists, expatriates or migrant workers to Malaysia have the basic human right to safety and security. DAP cannot endorse or give legitimacy to threats of racial riots or violence in anyway or manner.

If DAP after obtaining a big mandate and powers that be are bent on succumbing to mob rule, then why even bother to talk about rule of law.

The New Malaysia aspirants did not expect a route that will let the country decay into a failed state by allowing these thuggish brutes to dictate the government on the mode of governance of the day. The political will that right-is-right must be upheld and not might-is-right.

The Pakatan HArapan federal government should take a firm stand against racist extremists. It is shocking and unbelievable that they are doing otherwise.

DAP should have instead adopt and uphold the wise words of the Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Fuzi Harun who stressed that the public has a right to express their opinions on ICERD, but must not disrupt public order. We would expect DAP, being in government now to recognise the human rights of the silent majority, and ICERD supporters of their fundamental right to societal stability and safety.
