Press statement by MCA National Youth Chairperson Datuk Nicole Wong Siaw Ting

Students advance only when educated professionally, not emotionally

MCA Youth is deeply concerned about a viral video in which a professor at a public university is seen abusing and shaming a student during an online class merely because the student did not have a laptop. While it is true that the student has since completed his studies, it is equally unfortunate that such an incident occurred in the first place. It also casts a negative light on the noble profession of teaching and the associated public university.

MCA Youth believes that education comes first and takes precedence over all other considerations. The lecturer's behaviour, on the other hand, is a major violation of the instructors' code of ethics and a breach of the trust that educators are expected to have. It was more emotional in nature, which hampered the learning of the students who participated in it.

In this regard, MCA Youths urges the relevant university to take swift and severe action against the lecturer in order to prevent future instances of educators bullying students. Students who have been bullied are more likely to develop mental health issues and stress in the long run, which can have a negative impact on all aspects of their lives.

MCA Youth would also like to thank YB Dato' Dr. Noraini Ahmad, Minister of Higher Education, for her prompt response on this topic, as well as demand clarification from the relevant parties.
