Wee: Chinese firms in construction industry will spur local trade

On Friday    09-03-2018 09:12:00

PETALING JAYA: The different sub-sectors in the construction industry will benefit from the projects participated by Chinese companies here, said Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

As such, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said it was inaccurate to say that the Chinese would gain everything from the projects that would stimulate 170 sub-sectors in the construction industry.

“When people try to stir up the emotions of the local business community, they will say all kinds of things. But be realistic. When foreign companies come here, the first to benefit are the locals,” he said yesterday, citing the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex as an example.

He was speaking to reporters after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Malaysia-Guangdong Chamber of Investment Promotion and the Guangdong People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

He was asked if the influx of Chinese mega-projects here would affect local job opportunities.

Dr Wee said more construction companies from China would come in as they could provide improvements in terms of speed, quality and costs.

He also noted that from 2012 to June 2017, there were 173 engineering, procurement and construction projects worth RM97.5bil awarded to Chinese companies.
