KUALA LUMPUR: MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong questions Education Ministry's flip-flop over funding for 60 Chinese independent schools.

"The official parliamentary written reply given by Education Ministry on Wednesday (July 25) was that independent schools will not be funded as they were not within the education system.

"This contradicts what was promised by DAP secertary-general Lim Guan Eng who said that Pakatan would provide funding for the Chinese independent schools if they were voted in as the government," he told reporters at a press conference here on Thursday (July 26).

However, Dr Wee said that Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik issued a statement on Thursday (July 26) saying the ministry is discussing with the Finance Ministry to provide funding for the schools.

"Why is the minister saying that the ministry is considering the matter now instead of including this in his written reply a day earlier," he said.

Dr Wee (BN-Ayer Hitam) had asked the Education Ministry to state the status of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and funds for Chinese independent schools.

Dr Maszlee's turn-about comes after criticism by two Perak DAP lawmakers on the matter.

Ipoh Timor MP Wong Kah Won and Bercham state assemblyman Ong Boon Piow slammed Dr Maszlee over his inital reply, saying that Pakatan should resolve the issue.
