Press statement by MCA Publicity Bureau Deputy Chairman Lau Chin Kok

DAP Ministers switch stands to not abolish FT Ministry, can DAP hold firm to  principle?

I would like to question DAP, whether it still holds firm to its stand of abolishing the Ministry of Federal Territories?

During the Barisan Nasional administration, several leaders from DAP including Teresa Kok, Liew Chin Tong, Tan Kok Wai, Lim Lip Eng etc. had repeatedly called on then government to abolish the Ministry of Federal Territories, by giving the following reasons:

-Liew Chin Tong: The Ministry of Federal Territories is an additional department, abolishing it will save RM1 billion a year

-Tan Kok Wai: The Ministry of Federal Territories is redundant as it has similar functions as that of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), which may disrupt the general operations of government departments

-Lim Lip Eng: The functions of the Ministry of Federal Territories overlaps with that of Putrajaya and Labuan Municipal Councils. The co-existence of both is a waste of taxpayers’ money. It is recommended that the government abolish the Ministry of Federal Territories to help the people save over RM1 billion per year

Ever since Pakatan took office, Teresa Kok had once said that the government should abolish the Ministry of Federal Territories, as she believes this will not only counter balance the bureaucratic system, but also prevent it from having overlapping functions with DBKL.

I doubt if former Amanah Communications Director Khalid Samad really meant it when he called on the previous Barisan government to abolish the Ministry of Federal Territories. This is because he seems to have ‘changed his mindset following a change of his position. Ever since he was appointed as the Federal Territories Minister, he made a U-turn and now says his Ministry does not hijack the role of the Kuala Lumpur mayor, and that its existence is necessary. Such contradicting remark has made the people very confused. Furthermore, DAP, which has been urging the government to abolish the Ministry of Federal Territories, now falls silent.

Therefore, the rakyat have the right to know if DAP still agrees or opposes to its comrade Khalid Samad’s views to not have the Ministry of Federal Territories abolished? What is DAP’s stand on this matter?
