PETALING JAYA: The Sabah MCA has fully supported the party’s decision to use its emblem to contest in upcoming Balakong by-election on Sep 8.
Sabah MCA State Liaison Committee Secretary, Datuk Chew Kok Woh (pic) said the decision marks an important milestone in MCA’s reform effort.
“We believe that with a new political positioning, MCA will be able to ditch that old baggage of being a ruling component party, and play the role of a constructive opposition party,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 12).
MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had announced that MCA would contest its own party logo for the first time in the upcoming by-election.
This is considered significant as the 69-year-old MCA – the second largest Barisan Nasional component party – had always contested under the coalition’s dacing (scales) symbol.
“We also unanimously agree that by ensuring a new political positioning, MCA will be able to speak up for the Chinese community and all rakyat, as well as walk the path of all people,” said Chew.
He added that in the near future, MCA will focus on ensuring a new political direction and positioning, committing to a complete party’s reform with determination.
Balakong, a Chinese-majority state seat in Selangor with over 60% Chinese voters, fell vacant after its DAP assemblyman Eddie Ng Tien Chee died in a traffic accident on July 20.
In GE14, Ng won 41,768 votes to beat Barisan’s Lim Chin Wah (MCA) who got 5,875 votes and PAS’ Mohamad Ibrahim who obtained 6,230 votes.
Nomination is on Aug 18 and polling on Sept 8 – and the same dates apply for the Seri Setia by-election, which was called following the demise of incumbent assemblyman PKR vice-president Prof Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin on Aug 2.
