Press statement by MCA Penang State Liaison Committee Chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng

So busy that Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng shirks responsibility on flood mitigation projects?

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is too busy ridding himself of dissidents to consolidate his shrinking influence in Penang as is thus not actively paying attention to resolve the flood woes in the northern state. If the responsibility for flood mitigation can be so conveniently neglected, he definitely deserves the title of “master shirker.”

Now we can see that Lim Guan Eng will only dish out irresponsible remarks against MCA but will not deal with current affairs affecting Penang. More important to him, he is too occupied sidelining dissidents in an attempt to keep state legislators out of contact with voters.

It is apparent that Guan Eng is currently enjoying daily publicity. He intentionally slams MCA and BN on various issues, and deliberately churns out plausible allegations on issues related to Chinese education. It seems that he is purposely creating an illusion that BN is unfair and providing less grants to Penang compared to other states, so that those not in the know will mis-assume that BN is unjust towards Chinese schools in Penang. Condemning MCA has become his daily top priority. With regards to handling the Penang flood issue, Guan Eng is more inclined to ditch all responsibilities to the federal government to execute tasks which the state government should take charge of.  It appears that whatever problems that emerge are not related to the Penang state government, and this is a completely irresponsible attitude to practise.

From the Penang state government’s handling of flood assistance, we can see that it is pretty obvious that it is misusing state machinery for housekeeping purpose and purging state Assemblymen who publicly criticised the Bagan state Assemblyman. After PKR Kebun Bunga rep Cheah Kah Peng, DAP Tanjung Bungah rep Teh Yee Cheu became the latest casualty who was stripped off his authority to deal with the one-off flood relief payment without prior notice. This is extremely unfair to voters in their constituencies because the State Assemblymen were elected by the people and the Penang state government does not have the power to do so.

If Guan Eng assumes that this should be a “good thing” as the Penang Chief Minister, he should learn how to govern the state and attract foreign investment to stimulate the economy and increase domestic employment opportunities, instead of relying on land sales and land reclamation to fill up the state’s coffers, thereby pawning away the rights of the people of Penang.
