Press statement by Wanita MCA Chairman Datuk Heng Seai Kie

Heng: Be the eyes and ears of RMP; crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility

Wanita MCA came across a video going around on the social media, depicting a helpless woman identified as Kogee Sinniah, claiming to have sought assistance from the Alam Damai police station in Cheras, but were barred from entering it. This was despite the fact that she and her son were followed by a group of young men who may have ill intentions to harm them.

Such action is grossly negligent and ought to be chastised. And the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) has been widely criticised, by various quarters, due to incidents as such. Anyway, the police force should be commended for its swift action in arresting three youths within 24 hours after the video was uploaded to Facebook. This provides hopes that the level of trust of the public in the force could be restored.

At the same time, Wanita MCA applauds the victim of crime for her courage in filming a video narrating her unpleasant experience. She must be frightened while finding her way to the nearest police station. However, a proper complaint should be filed to enable disciplinary action be taken against the offenders. Making a video viral online will not solve the problems. Therefore, Wanita MCA would like to encourage madam Kogee to come forward to lodge a police report on the incident; so that actions could be taken against those who are answerable and responsible for this! Besides, her feedback could be useful as input to help improve our RMP’s services. After all, crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility.

In fact, Wanita MCA believes a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is in place to ensure victims of crime filing complaints at police stations are assured compassionate and humane assistance. A practical rule of thumb for police officers is that a victim should be handled at all times in a sympathetic, constructive and reassuring manner with due regard to the situation he or she is facing.
