Press Statement by MCA Spokesperson Chan Quin Er

MCA lauds and supports historic MOU, calls to turn this opportunity into victory

In a landmark moment for the political landscape in Malaysia, a bipartisan consensus has been reached in the form of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Transformation and Political Stability. MCA lauds and pledges our full support to this historical inking of political cooperation in a bid to move beyond politics, and commit the resources on both sides of the divide to the singular purpose of the betterment of Malaysian lives amidst this pandemic era.

The MoU reflects the aspirations of Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to create a Malaysian Family (Keluarga Malaysia), and is in line with the decree of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah for the Members of Parliament (MPs) to set aside personal agendas and practice consensus democracy through unity and togetherness for the sake of the nation’s future.

In view of the corresponding confusions and misunderstandings, it must be emphasised that the MoU is not an invitation for Pakatan Harapan to join the government. The Opposition retains its role to help articulate public concerns and provide formal check-and-balance to the executive power. It marks, however, a point of departure for political maturity that will prove critical for the National Recovery Plan and passing reforms.

The political gap in Malaysia spans three generations; many believe it is unrealistic to expect animosity between political factions to dissipate overnight. Having said that, the memorandum charts the right course, and has successfully accentuated underlying willingness in Malaysians to overcome differences, seek common ground, and redouble our efforts to solve the problems plaguing our country.

MCA believes the MoU on Transformation and Political Stability is an opportunity; unprecedented in the past decades, and might not be readily available again in the future. Right now, we hold in our hands a catalyst that can redefine the political landscape of Malaysia and a real chance for change. Together, we can turn this opportunity into a shared victory.
