Lim Guan Eng cannot deny Pakatan’s failure to fulfil Buku Harapan promises

Lim Guan Eng still does not want to admit that when Pakatan (PH) helmed the federal government, its administration was a failed one. In a Facebook posting on 13 Jan 2022, the DAP Secretary General claimed that PH’s “14th General Election Manifesto that would have been fully implemented if given the opportunity to fulfill the five-year mandate.” In other words, he meant to say that 22 months were insufficient for PH to deliver on their pledges.

He cited reducing the North-South Highway toll by 18% to indicate that PH was serious in fulfilling its promises. However, this is only one example that he could cite and cited so ostensibly.

The fact is, PH vowed to take over all highways, and not merely reduce their toll rates. PH has never shown any commitment to fulfil its manifesto - almost all of which were made haphazardly with the unlikelihood of being delivered despite the mandate given by voters for any number of terms.

PH’s promises of the “moon and stars” were merely meant to fish for ballots in the 2018 election.

However, since elected into Putrajaya, PH was consistently entangled with the issue of power struggles, especially when it involved the transfer of the premiership from then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim. At the same time, a lot of government resources were wasted on regressive policies or outlandish projects like creating a flying car.

Similarly, DAP Ministers failed in managing their portfolios. The rakyat certainly cannot forget how Teresa Kok as Minister of Primary Industries botched in developing the Ministry, where even settlers and smallholders suffered in misery after commodity prices plummeted during PH’s rule.

Guan Eng himself also failed to perform his responsibilities properly. History will remember him as a Finance Minister who only knew how to raise national debt, sell national assets and punish
Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) out of political reprisal. In fact, questions were raised when his court charges for alleged corruption in the Penang undersea tunnel were dropped just a few months after PH became the government.

In conclusion, PH, especially DAP, should reflect and apologise to all Malaysians who voted for them for reneging on their promises and failing to govern the country successfully despite being given the mandate. They flopped despite not facing as big a challenge as they do today.
