KAJANG: Tan Chee Teong, MCA’s hopeful for the Balakong state by-election, has admitted that it’s a tough fight for the party but urged the voters to give it a chance to keep Pakatan Harapan’s power in check.

“As an opposition party in Selangor, MCA does not deny that our chances in this by-election are slim.

“But I will fight my hardest to win this seat in order to monitor Pakatan’s work,” said Tan during the launch of the party’s by-election machinery by party deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong at its new operations centre in Batu 11 Cheras yesterday.

Balakong resident Tan, 40, a hardware store owner, is Serdang MCA division committee member who is also active in NGO work.

He vowed to focus on pressing local issues in Balakong such as traffic congestion, flooding, water disruptions and dengue outbreaks if he was voted into the state assembly.

Dr Wee said a Balakong native is better suited to serve the constituency as he is familiar with the local issues.

“We want to give a chance to our local candidate to champion the needs of the people of Balakong at the state government level,” he said.

He added that with Pakatan controlling more than 90% of the state seats in Selangor, greater opposition representation is necessary to provide check and balance in a functional democracy.

Pakatan dominates the 56-seat Selangor assembly, with only five assemblymen from the opposition.

Dr Wee, who is Ayer Hitam MP, also questioned the Pakatan government if it has fulfilled its 100-day promises to the nation.

Present at the launch were MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun as well as several MCA and MIC division chairmen and party members.
