The Silence of the Lambs: DAP in the Age of Mahathirism

Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir displays traits of a tiger; full of ambition, ever ferocious with an insatiable hunger, and under his tremendous shadow, DAP has devolved into nothing more than lambs. Meek, silent little lambs.

Despite failing to muster even a single bleat in the government, DAP managed to shine through in one area — its hypocrisy. In DAP’s opposition years, they took pleasure in insulting MCA for allegedly staying mum over certain issues. Take a moment and contemplate, when was the last time you heard DAP standing out to protest against some of Mahathir and their allies’ more controversial decisions?

But don’t just take our word for it. Please fire up your favourite Internet browser, and with the help of your most trusted search engine, couple the keyword “DAP” with the following issues:-

1)     Third national car by 2020

2)     Khazanah Nasional and Mahathir’s bumiputera agenda

3)     Putting UEC recognition on the backburner

4)     Imposition of a Shariah-compliant dress code on the private sector

5)     Scrapping of MRT3

6)     The reluctance to put a serious end to child marriage

7)     Threats of closing down casinos

8)     The failure of GST abolishment to lower cost of living

9)     A deteriorating Malaysia-China relationship

10)  The removal of LGBT activists’ pictures from an art festival in their homebase, Penang.

By now, it is highly likely you would have arrived at a verdict — The once loud and outspoken DAP has become strangely muted under the leadership of Mahathir.

Previously, DAP reassured the voters that Mahathir would not have a free reign of power under Pakatan’s rule; or that people power along with DAP can provide a proper check-and-balance.

Somehow, the exact opposite is happening right now. The seventh Prime Minister seemingly has all the power to do anything he wants — from fulfilling his personal dream of having his own national car brand, to self-appointing himself to the position of Chairman of a sovereign wealth fund — conveniently turning a deaf ear to the protests of the public, while DAP stands quietly in the sidelines, meek as a lamb.

Where is the promised “proper check-and-balance” when we need it most?

DAP went into May 9th, 2018, promising a new, progressive Malaysia. However, from that day onwards, we are shown nothing but the horror of DAP’s New Malaysian political scene ala The Silence of the Lambs.

DAP, stop giving everyone the silent treatment and start voicing out against your boss’ ludicrous political direction. Prove to us that we are wrong in calling you hypocrites and silent lambs. Either that or maybe replace that Rocket logo of yours with lambs and sheep that better represent your party’s current position.
