Responding to nationwide calls and concerns against the proposal by the Pakatan Harapan government to amend laws to enable the abolition of capital punishment, the MCA Youth Executive Team Against the Abolition of the Death Penalty had on 20 Nov 2018 launched an ‘‘MCA Youth Against Abolition of the Death Penalty’’ campaign at the KLCC business district. Receiving overwhelming response from people of all ethnicities, the campaign accumulated a total of 300 signatures within an hour.

The MCA Youth Executive Team Against the Abolition of the Death Penalty also displayed giant banners at areas surrounding KLCC to convey the message to members of public, so as to raise more public awareness on the issue.

MCA Youth Central Committee member cum person-in-charge of the MCA Youth Executive Team Against the Abolition of the Death Penalty Heng Zhi Li informed that “MCA Youths hopes to convey the public’s sentiments on the death penalty to the government, and demands that the government reviews its proposal to abolish capital punishment.”

He added that the death sentence is a punishment permitted by the Federal Constitution, whereby the Constitutional rights of citizens are enshrined, and thus, capital punishment against convicted offenders is to ensure that social order and national security are protected.

“If capital punishment is abolished, then the rakyat’s long-held belief that the element of retribution in ‘if you kill someone, you will pay with your life’ will descend into ‘if you kill someone, you need not pay with your life.’”

Heng Zhi Li pointed out that he received many feedback from foreign tourists. “They said that although the abolition of the death penalty has been lauded by many human rights organisations worldwide, victims of human rights violations are often ignored by the government in countries without a death penalty.”

"They believe that the interests of people's lives far outweigh the rights of criminals. The death penalty must therefore be retained to deter any potential criminals from committing heinous crimes."

MCA Youth will hold joint campaigns to collect public sentiments nationwide, so as to assist the anti-death penalty abolition coalition to convey the public’s opposition to Parliament. With one person one voice, MCA Youth hopes that non-governmental organisations nationwide can participate in the joint campaigns, so that the PH-led government will take notice of the rakyat’s strong objection against any plans to abolish the death penalty.
