Delicious treat: Dr Wee (in blue) meeting with Yong Peng residents at a booth during the Jom Gerak Teguh Bersama MCA carnival at Yong Peng.

YONG PENG: Some Opposition leaders studied at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC) and this is an undeniable fact, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA deputy president said records showed that the number of graduates from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and TARUC had already crossed 210,000.

“You cannot change the fact that both institutions were founded by the MCA.

“Even some of their (Opposition) MPs have studied in TARUC. So they cannot come out to deny the fact that they were students there,” he said after launching the Jom Gerak Teguh Bersama MCA carnival here yesterday.

In drawing an analogy to a “biological father”, Dr Wee said no children could change the fact that their fathers were “smart, handsome or the direct opposite”.

“It does not matter if you do not want to thank him. The fact is he is your father.

“But we are urging all these people, if somebody tries to criticise your alma mater, it is your duty to defend it,” he added.

Dr Wee, who is the Ayer Hitam MP, also dismissed allegations that students pursuing education in MCA-founded institutions were forced to support the party.

“We never said you must be thankful to the MCA. Neither did we make it mandatory that only party members can enrol in these institutions,” he stressed.

On the two-day carnival at SJK (C) Yong Peng 1 here, he said the fun-filled activities lined up for today include seminars, a singing contest and a basketball competition.

The carnival will start as early as 8am with a dancing session, followed by a bicycle ride, drift competition, cooking demonstration and a durian party in the afternoon.

MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai will attend the closing ceremony this evening, which will also include a motivation session.

“I urged the people to come and join us in this carnival.

“We have a wide range of interesting programmes for people of all ages and backgrounds,” Dr Wee said.

Yesterday, many visitors, especially the elderly, took the opportunity to go for the free health screening and eye check-up, while children took part in a colouring contest.

Dr Wee also gave out free hyperopia spectacles to those with visual impairment.
