Tan Chuan Hong: A flood-free homeland for residents of Sin Tat Garden, Butterworth

17 Dec, Butterworth-MCA Penang State Organising Secretary cum Bagan Division Secretary Dr Tan Chuan Hong today urged Bagan MP cum Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng as well as the two state excos in Bagan constituency that they “must have proper planning on the building and drainage system in Taman Sin Tat.” In addition, he also urged state authorities to show “fair and transparent enforcement to avoid the flood situation from becoming worse in the future.”

“According to the feedback from residents, they have never encountered floods in Medan Melur Selatan until the Raja Uda Voluntary Fire Brigade set up a base on a piece of land here which previously was a farmland,” Dr Tan highlighted before informing that “the situation is getting worse because there is lack of a proper planned drainage system.”

Drawing attention to the plight of the residents, Dr Tan said, “when it rains, rain water form Tingkat Melur 1 flows to Medan Melur Selatan's drainage system due to the roads in Tingkat Melur 1 having been padded. But unfortunately, due to some reasons below, rain water is prevented from being directed to the drainage system namely: some residents occupied some parts of the previous roads. Moreoever, the Raja Uda Voluntary Fire Brigade's base is built on higher ground, and the land around Dewan Sri Bagan Jermal has also been padded.”

Dr Tan requested the Chief Minister and the two state Excos to undertake a site visit as soon as possible and to not pretend to “ ‘see nothing, hear nothing’ and ignore the neighbourhood issue here.” He also criticised the state government citing the buildings and roads here are a result of unplanned and disorganised “township planning”, thus exposing the Pakatan HArapan government as non trustworthy,  undertaking shady jobs and proving that the Competency, Accountability and Transparency (CAT) policy is dead.
