Press statement by MCA Publicity Spokesman (English / Bahasa Malaysia) cum Religious Harmony Bureau Chairman Dato’ Sri Ti Lian Ker

Stop Vilifying Honorable Assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu

          1. Penang DAP Vice Chairman Zairil Khir’s statement that the “Penang DAP state assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu is free to leave the party as there are always new leaders who can be groomed to take over his place in the near future,... (Malay Mail Online, 29 Oct 17)” is typical of DAP arrogance and blatant disregard for principles that DAP preaches but does not the least bit practise.

          2. The DAP’s State Assemblyman has been a strong critic of the DAP Penang Government’s developer-friendly policies at the expense of his constituents’ safety. The recent Tanjung Bungah landslide have shown that Assemblyman Teh is right and vindicated.

          3. The Tanjung Bungah Assemblyman The’s concern for the safety of his constituents is not “washing DAP’s dirty linen in public” as alleged by Zairil. In fact it is a public expression of frustration since his concern via the party and DAP government channel have been disregarded or ignored.

          4. Teh’s announcement to quit the party citing rampant hill development and the disregard to his concerns is part of the democratic process. By quitting the party, he has shown his sincerity and passion to his cause. It is also a show of no confidence against the party leadership.

          5. We do not need to wait for a landslide in Tanjung Bungah or sacrifice 11 workers’ lives to vindicate Teh’s concern. His statement “I am not in line with the party leadership. There have been no reforms. It’s time for me to go (The Star, 29 Oct 17),” clearly reflects his frustration with the DAP Government and his sacrifice ought the be lauded and not dismissed or vilified by DAP leaders.

          6. On the contrary, Teh’s high moral standing and principles must be praised and made exemplary by all our Wakil Rakyats whether from Barisan Nasional, Pakatan or PAS. For Zairil to diminish or vilify Teh’s stand reflects the lack of principles in DAP’s leadership. This is so ironic and cynical for a party that preaches reform and a high moral standing.
