Press statement by MCA National Youth Vice Chairman Chua Hock Kuan

Criticisms against MRT3 baseless, Chang Lih Kang lacks professionalism

PKR Tanjong Malim MP Chang Lih Kang should be rebuked for asking the government to temporarily halt the MRT3 project. As Chang Lih Kang made an unfounded response to the MRT3 project, not only is his call unprofessional, in fact, it is absurd.

Any individual who holds valid information or evidence involving the MRT3 project should report it to the police or the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), instead of sputtering aimlessly devoid of reason.

Perhaps because he is facing his party’s elections, he therefore deliberately issues baseless statements to gain cheap publicity. However, I am confident the rakyat know how to discern and cast aside muddy allegations.

As a Member of Parliament, I hope that Lih Kang will act in a professional manner and not score cheap political mileage through baseless attacks against our nation’s major infrastructure projects, and thereby create an ill perception among the rakyat.

The MRT3 project scheduled to begin this year will be able to improve connectivity between various public transport systems as well as further complement the public rail transport network in the Klang Valley.

As the public transport system improves, the government may formulate several new policies to reduce the use of private vehicles. This is in line with Malaysia's efforts to reduce carbon emissions, with a target of becoming a carbon-free nation by 2050.

Economists are of the opinion that the future operations of the MRT3 will benefit the construction industry, which has largely been lacking in vitality in recent years. Thus, the approval of the MRT3 project by the government is timely and is good news for the industry.

Lih Kang's tactics today are identical to those of the previous Pakatan Harapan government's actions which deliberately delayed various mega projects resulting with sharp increases in costs. These include the High Speed Rail (HSR) project which todate, has yet to be reinstated, thus denying the country a chance to revive the economy.
