In a live interview with The Malaysian Insight last year, Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching elaborated on her aspiration that schools in Malaysia would no longer be separated into “government schools” and “government-aided schools”.

When I asked the Education Ministry to state the progress of the 10+6 Chinese primary schools (SJKCs) and the allocation for these schools in the last Parliament meeting, it said via a written reply that the government would bear the full costs if the status of the school is “sekolah kerajaan”. As for “sekolah bantuan kerajaan”, funds would have to come from the respective school boards since the government does not own the school sites and buildings.

In the past, DAP protested against dividing SJKCs into “government schools” and “government-aided schools” because government-aided SJKCs have to raise its own funds. And yet the new Pakatan Harapan government continues to enforce this policy which they used to consider unfair.

As Deputy Education Minister, Teo Nie Ching has to tell us whether she agreed with the Education Ministry’s reply. What has she done so far to do away with categorising SJKCs since she took her oath of office?
