Press statement by MCA Terengganu state chairman Dato’ Toh Chin Yaw

Promoting economic development, ECRL greatly benefits East Coast residents

The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project will accelerate development and growth in the East Coast region that will be most advantageous to the states of Terengganu, Pahang and Kelantan. It is expected to boost economic activities in industries like commerce, tourism and logistics, and ultimately profits the people in the region.

Terengganu MCA will prepare and formulate strategies to assist and support the people of Terengganu to participate and reap the benefits that come with the ECRL development. It is important for the locals of all races to be ready to grasp the opportunities alongside the project and to gain from its benefits.

The ECRL is 688km in length with 22 stations along the way connecting the East Coast and the West Coast regions of Peninsular Malaysia. The railway will greatly shorten the travelling time and improve connectivity between the two regions. The land journey from Selangor to Kota Bharu will be reduced by half from the current 8-hour car drive to just over 4 hours by train. This is a great headway that brings much convenience to the people of the East Coast region.

The ECRL is expected to be completed by 2024, and will serve a population of 4.4million people along the proximity of the railway line.

It is short-sighted and senseless for certain individuals from the Opposition and Non-Governmental Organisations to label the ECRL project as selling off the country’s sovereignty.

In the present globalised world, it is common for international companies to form consortiums and joint ventures companies to undertake mega infrastructure construction works. Inarguably, improved transportation infrastucture can only benefit the people. The groundless accusations of ‘selling off the country’s sovereignty’ are simply baseless and reflects the bad intention to mislead the people.
