Lim Guan Eng should not jump to conclusions regarding Budget 2023

As reported in Free Malaysia Today on 15 June 2022, Lim Guan Eng slammed a suggestion for the general election to be held soon after the tabling of the 2023 Budget, calling it an abuse of power and vote buying, while claiming that the country’s resources would be used for political and personal interests.

The announcement of Budget 2023 by the Finance Ministry is to start gathering feedback from stakeholders and the public to ensure its comprehensiveness and versatility. According to the responses received, the government can then plan ahead for the future based on the people’s needs.

Furthermore, Lim Guan Eng as the Pakatan Finance Minister in 2019 claimed that their Budget 2020 was “like an election budget”, the kind normally given in a general election year. Thus, Guan Eng recognises that the tabling of the national budget implies attracting the people’s support.

It is understandable that Guan Eng can be anxious about an upcoming general election, but it is not right to link everything to politics, especially when the national budget concerns the welfare and socioeconomic development of all Malaysians.

Besides that, wouldn’t the tabling of the national budget be an opportune moment for the people to decide for themselves whether the government of the day truly understands their current and future needs?

Thus, we urge Guan Eng to not jump to conclusions, and instead use his knowledge and abilities for the betterment of the people.
