MCA HQ, 19 Sept – At a press conference chaired by MCA Vice President Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun whereby she conveyed that she has instructed her lawyers to issue a letter of demand to DAP State Assemblyman for Damansara Utama YB Yeo Bee Yin for an apology, and to also request her to remove an offending video from her Facebook, the first of which appeared on 14 Sept 2017, which contained false accusations against the former regarding a parcel of land which was purchased by MCA Selangor in March 2008, Mei Fun also took to task the Rocket’s MP for Petaling Jaya Utara Tony Pua over his failure to comprehend land matters which comes under the state’s jurisdiction vs federal matters which MPs are elected for.

Clarifying with the media, Mei Fun explained, “under the Land Office, there is a Jawatankuasa Tanah (Land Committee) which is chaired by the District Officer and attended by all the State Assemblymen and the Assistant District Officer.  That Land Committee has nothing to do with Members of Parliament (MP). MP’s are not one of the Committee members in that Land Committee.”

Elaborating further, Mei Fun informed, “secondly, there is a monthly Mesyuarat Penbangunan Daerah or District Development Meeting which provides a platform for wakil rakyats to raise concerns about local issues related to the federal government, and the federal government projects carried out in their area. That also has nothing to do with land.”

Rebuking Tony Pua for his want of knowledge on federal vs state matters, Mei Fun pointed out, “as a two-term MP of Petaling Jaya Utara, we are surprised that Tony Pua does not know the structure and also how Land Office works, or what is his own responsibility or whether he himself has the authority to deal with any land issue. That is his job which he has to learn and needs to know as an MP. That is something which he at least needs to know.”

As to legal action to be taken against Tony Pua, Mei Fun replied that she is discussing with her lawyer over this. “Today, my lawyer will issue a letter of demand to Yeo Bee yin, one-by-one.”

When pressed by the media that Mei Fun as the MP at that time should have known about the land sale, the MCA Vice President, patiently, calmly yet firmly informed, “I have never denied that I knew MCA Selangor applied for the land. My answer is: The land was not applied or handled by me and I do not have the authority to deal with the land, and this is why I do not know about the deal.”

On allegations that MCA Selangor bought the land purportedly for RM1 psf when that is the price for land transactions for religious purpose, once again, Mei Fun had to correct misconception among the media as successfully raised by the Opposition. “This was informed by Tony Pua. Ask him to check his facts. Don’t listen to what he says and think what he says is correct. Obviously what he says is against me, and the facts against me is wrong.”

When hard-pressed by the media if she thought that it is correct to apply for land for RM1 psf, Mei Fun responded, “as long as they applied for the land according to the law, do it legally, I do not see anything wrong. MCA is actually giving service to the public.”

When informed that Bee Yin had discovered the land was purchased at RM1psf when MCA Selangor applied to rezone the land, Mei Fun who is also the MCA Social Development Committee Chairman requested the media to “call MCA Selangor to check the facts.”

As to Tony Pua claiming that he is not against any political party buying land, Mei Fun retorted, “do I have to respond to everything he says?” She also reminded that Tony Pua “can say anything he wants, but I will take action against any false allegation. I have not done anything wrong.”

In pursuit of sensationalising news to score votes, it is unfortunate that DAP deems it fit to drag a completely unrelated person, this time the arrows are at Mei Fun, into its mudslings against MCA. This gutter politics by DAP is nothing new, but unfortunately, it is one strategy to gain votes.
