Exco Abdul Malik is obviously an extremist; Penang state govt must clarify its stance to be stern against extremists

I would like to urge Lim Guan Eng to clarify his stance over Penang Religious Affairs Exco Abdul Malik Kassim’s and the spokesman for the Penang Chief Minister’s office Wan Ji Hussein’s move of expressing support towards Muslim preacher Shahul Hamid’s extremist remarks. This is to confirm whether such extremist views represent that of the Penang state government as well.

As a religious school’s headmaster, it is unacceptable for Shahul Hamid to hold such extremist views. This includes saying that Muslims should not patronise non-Muslim hair salons, discouraged Muslim parents from sending their children to “non-Muslim” schools. Even more ridiculous is for Abdul Malik, an exco in charge of state religious affairs, or Wan Ji, from the CM’s office to strongly support such extremist remarks.

In recent heightened religious sensitivity in the country, even the Malay Rulers have voiced out against those holding extremist views, while different organisations were also seen actively promoting the principles of moderation and racial harmony. So it is only fair if the DAP-led Penang state government too, can put aside its political ideology, and promote moderation together. Shahul Hamid’s extremist remarks are definitely not a precedent, thus the Penang state government should clarify its stance on the matter, or no one knows what Abdul Malik will next do?

Judging from Lim Guan Eng’s character, he will surely come forward to deny whatever serious issues that come his way. But this time, he has not given any response, does this mean that he concur with Abdul Malik’s position on this?

Nevertheless, the Penang Chief Minister should come forward to clarify his stance. This is because it is wrong for a preacher like Shahul Hamid to poison the young with false mindsets. The effects could be far-reaching if ignored. Hence the Penang state government should state its position clearly now, to show it is stern in curbing extremism.
