Press statement by MCA Deputy President Dato’ Dr Mah Hang Soon

Injustice and absolute tyranny of the PH Government

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has done great harm and injustice when they failed to renew the contracts of 4 medical officers (MOs). These 4 MOs have shown great interest and passion in their field in successfully obtaining part 1 MRCOG and MRCPCH. However, misfortune struck when the hammer of tyranny befell them as the current Pakatan Harapan Government just decided not to renew their contract.

With reference to the news article in The Star (19 Jan 2020) “Sibu doctor regrets decision to reject UK offer”, there is no doubt that patriotic Malaysian doctors and other Malaysian students studying overseas will fear returning home.

Where is the promise of taking care of our human assets? PH made tonnes of promise but failed to take care of our own doctors.

The Health Ministry must institute reforms to assist our doctors to the path of their aspired specialty. Imagine the crushed dreams of young aspiring doctors when they are axed by the body that is supposed to protect the sanctity of healthcare. Where is justice?

Without working in an approved hospital for a period of at least four years, the affected doctors cannot sit for their final part of the paper in O&G and Paediatrics.

Despite Malaysia facing a shortage of specialist doctors, what the MoH did coupled with the Pakatan government’s plans to stop the critical service incentive allowance was simply not right and demoralise other housemen and MOs. If Dr Dzulkefly cannot even handle simple things as such, we recommend that he resign and relinquish it to a more suitable individual.

The irony of these MOs’ termination is that Sibu General Hospital in a letter dated 22 Nov 2019 to MoH  had confirmed that the O&G and Pediatric departments in the hospital were understaffed. We now have the answer as to why healthcare service quality has dropped as the government overworks the current staff and shortchanges the Rakyat. Please remember that the Rakyat voted you to alleviate their burdens. This is akin to a betrayal to the healthcare community and rest assured, it will not be forgotten or forgiven.

Such a scenario will no longer influence the voting pattern of Malaysians on the ballot slip. Rather, they will vote with the feet. MoH must arrest this problem soonest possible, with the correct mechanism to encourage talent gain, lest more Malaysians depart our shores for more lucrative offers and better learning, working conditions abroad where their skills are recognised and wanted.
