In the Selangor State Executive Committee meeting tomorrow, all Pakatan Excos should keep in mind their duty as the people’s representatives and speak out against the degazette of the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserves (KLNFR). Even though towing the party line is important, Excos must not forget the people’s mandate and support the degazette blindly.

DAP has three representatives in the state Exco: Bandar Baru Klang ADUN Dato’ Teng Chang Khim, Kota Kemuning ADUN Tuan Ganabatirau, and Bandar Kinrara ADUN Ng Sze Han. They must speak out against the Pakatan state government’s mistakes as a form of check and balance.

Recently, the crown prince of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Idris Shah dismissed reports linking him to the development plans of KLNFR. Thus, there is no reason for the Pakatan Selangor State Government to not be transparent regarding the developers of the forest reserve.

In addition, the Pakatan Selangor State Government must scrap its mindset of commercialising Selangor’s natural environment. Peat swamps are habitat to many species of flora and fauna, and any disruption of their habitat could lead to even larger consequences.

In the most recent petition to save the Kuala Langat Forest Reserves, over 100,000 signatures have been collected. The Pakatan Selangor state government should heed the people’s sentiment and scrap development plans for forest reserves once and for all.
