MCA welcomes Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's move to step back from becoming Education Minister, as it shows that the Pakatan Harapan Government keeps its promises.

"This is an important decision and the Prime Minister has demonstrated to the rakyat that the Pakatan Harapan government can honour its promises," said MCA publicity bureau chairman Datuk Chai Kim Sen in a statement on Saturday (May 18).

Chai said that Dr Mahathir's initial decision to take up the Education Minister's position while being Prime Minister had violated one of Pakatan's manifesto promises.

Promise 12 in their manifesto declares that the Prime Minister will not hold another ministerial position, especially that of Finance Minister.

"As a result, MCA issued several reminders to the Prime Minister and the Pakatan government on this matter, emphasising that the Pakatan Manifesto had been breached within just one week of Tun Mahathir being sworn in, thereby undermining Pakatan’s own integrity," said Chai.

"Now that the premier has decided to relinquish his own appointment as Education Minister, this indicates that Pakatan is responsible," he said.

Chai said that MCA will continue to actively play the role of a constructive Opposition party.

He said that MCA will ensure that Pakatan honours its pledges and implements "fair and people-friendly good governance".
