Press Statement by MCA Penang State Liason Commission Chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng

Tan Seng Giaw’s cries of depleting greenery in Penang is giving Lim Guan Eng a slap on the face!

The Penang state government led by its Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, has wantonly destroyed the state’s lush green lung, which has infuriated even his DAP comrade Dr Tan Seng Giaw, who recently bemoaned the rapid decline of green space in Balik Pulau on his Facebook.

Tan Seng Giaw’s remarks hit the nail on the head, and gave the Penang state government a slap on the face. Of late, the media also reported that Penang has more than 30 ‘balding hills’, and the more severe ones accounted for about 7 of the total hills identified. Does Lim Guan Eng think that such matter will help raise the state’s reputation?

The Penang state government has repeatedly promised to build a ‘Cleaner & Greener Penang’ for the rakyat. Unexpectedly 9 years later, not only has Penang not become greener, but more green hills have turned bald as a result of over-development. Countless coastlines have been reclaimed and fell into the hands of countless developers!

All this while the Penang state government has widely propagated the ‘Cleaner & Greener Penang’ slogan, and upheld the banner of environmental protection. But Lim Guan Eng has not kept his words, and continues to allow development on the green hills extensively. This has eventually led to frequent floods in Penang, which has contradicted with the ‘Green’ propaganda, as well as the Penang state government’s promise to the rakyat. The ‘Cleaner & Greener Penang’ slogan has now become a big joke!

I urge Lim Guan Eng to stop doing tricks like the ‘I Love Penang’ campaign, and kept saying how much he loves Penang. But at the same time, he has placed any land parcel available for sale and chopped down any existing trees. He even bought a bungalow below market price, but the affordable housing for Penangites is nowhere to be seen, and now, the surrounding environment is also destroyed! Lim Guan Eng, enough is enough, stop lying!
