Press statement by Penang MCA Youth Chairman Datuk Michael Lee
Fees for reports costing more than expenses for flood mitigation efforts over past 8 years a shocking betrayal against Penangites
1. Penang MCA Youth is outraged over the disclosure that the DAP Penang Government had overpaid by RM136.4 million out of the RM229 million already paid to do reports for 3 roads totaling just 20kilometres in length.
2. We note that the start of construction for these 3 roads are set to be delayed by at least 3½  years from 2015 to mid-2018.
3. As pointed out by the BN Strategic Communications team yesterday, this RM136.4 million over-payment is more than the total sum of RM100 million that the DAP Penang Government said it had spent on flood mitigation projects over the past 8 years from 2008 to 2016.
4. It cannot be denied that flooding has gotten worse in Penang every year. Hundreds of thousands of Penang residents suffer from its effects on an increasingly frequent basis.
5. The Penang state Government has always given the excuse that it does not have enough money for flood mitigation and blamed the Federal Government.
6. Looks like that is not the case. The Penang state government just wasted money on the wrong things
7. My family, friends and I too have fallen victims to these floods.
8. Penang MCA Youth is shocked that the Penang Government has gotten its priorities so very wrong that the well-being and safety of the Rakyat of Penang is put into second place behind the interests of consultants and contractors.
9. We consider this action by DAP to be a betrayal of the highest order against the people of Penang.
10. Penang MCA Youth will work with the relevant authorities and will continue to investigate and pursue this matter.
11. If the DAP-led Penang state Government had spent RM320mil instead of RM100mil since 2008, perhaps Penang would not flood so badly now.
12. Silence is not an option for the DAP Penang Government.
13. The DAP Penang state Government is responsible for 8 years of suffering and losses from flooding in Penang.
