Press statement by Beliawanis MCA Chairperson Ivone Low Yi Wen

Reconsider hosting activities which threaten family values

Beliawanis MCA notes the concerns of various groups and individuals over the scheduled grand opening of a nightclub on 30 March 2023. The Chinese language Facebook promotion post of the event reads, “Don’t have to go to Thailand this time because they’re coming to Malaysia… Surrounded by a bunch of handsome guys in super sexy pyjamas.”

Given social issues like the growth rate of separation and divorce, single parenthood, sexual offences against minors and adults, incest or familial breakdown, sexually transmitted diseases, it is questionable if bringing in Thai adult males (akin to imports?) to entertain patrons serves any constructive purpose other than filling the cash tills of the organisers.

Photos in the advert display adult males attired in female under garments – an act which goes against any cultural norms or practices in Malaysia. Beliawanis MCA takes note of grievances aired against promoting crossdressing as the norm.

It would have been apt if the organisers had taken into account our Asian values, and the impropriety of marketing such an event, more so, when it is scheduled to be held during the holy month of Ramadan.

It would be more constructive if the grand opening featured healthy activities even if it may appear boring by nightclub standards like board games, throwing darts at a dart board, makeshift bowling lane or others if it wanted customers to relax for the night after a hard week’s work.

If performing arts from Thailand was the intention, the organiser could bring in Thai cultural dancers featuring Thai costumes.

Moreover, as the nightclub is located along Jalan Tun Razak, images of gyrating cross-dressing males do not bode well with the legacy of Malaysia’s second Prime Minister.
