PUTRAJAYA: The appointment of Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad as acting chairman of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) will not derail plans to transform the taxi industry, including the regulation of e-hailing services.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said plans to overhaul the industry were already underway as they were initiated way before Isa’s appointment.

“Plans to transform Uber and Grab are in place, and I will continue to monitor them.

“As Transport Minister, I oversee the urban public transportation transformation, whose key performance indicators are still under the ministry,” he said after the Cabinet meeting here yesterday.

Liow said this included the re-tabling of Bills next month to amend the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act 1987 and the Land Public Transport Act 2010, aimed at regulating e-hailing services.

He said a meeting would be held with Isa to brief him on the latest developments related to the public transportation sector.

The amendments to the Bills include making it mandatory for a company operating e-hailing services to have an intermediation business licence.

Also spelled out are the types of service provided, measures to safeguard the safety and security of passengers, and performance standards for e-hailing companies.

These include making it an offence to assault, hinder or obstruct those involved in e-hailing services.

On a separate matter, Liow said there were plans to set up more mobile speed cameras along accident-prone stretches during the Hari Raya festive season.

He added that motorists would be given ample warning as to where the cameras would be stationed as the Government wanted them as preventive measures in its bid to reduce road accidents.
