Press Statement by MCA International Communication & Diplomacy Bureau Chairperson cum Government Monitoring Committee Member Dr Tee Ching Seng

Encouraging political frogs, Law Minister Liew Vui Keong violates democracy & shreds PH govt’s credibility

The public threat against newly elected Tanjung Piai MP Dato’ Sri Dr Wee Jeck Seng by de facto Law Minister Liew Vui Keong that government allocation might not reach his constituency smoothly deserves the highest criticism. Not only has Liew run afoul of our democratic system, he reveals the Pakatan Harapan (PH) federal government’s arrogance, by even threatening disruption in promised government allocations besides trying to lure Opposition MPs over to PH.

Liew’s actions are a disgrace to voters. Has he forgotten that he was elected through democratic means, yet he pummels democracy by this veiled threat. Not only should he apologise to voters immediately, he should also relinquish his position as his remarks have betrayed the trust and support of voters.

As the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of law, Liew has not actively promoted the formulation of any anti-hopping Acts. On the contrary, he contravenes public opinions and insists on abolishing mandatory death penalty. Having uttered those remarks, Liew is not qualified to hold this position, nor is he suitable to be an elected representative. His political ethics are called to question, and he should thus resign at once.

There is no honour in luring elected representatives of the Opposition to desert their parties, more so when they received the rakyat’s mandate for the party they represent. Only those with experience of frog leaping have no qualms betraying their voters.

Pakatan’s practice of encouraging political frogs has not only caused political instability, its leaders too do not seriously serve the public. Investors have turned away from investing in Malaysia yet the leaders of PH are more focused on shoring up their power whilst neglecting national development.

If PH does not know how to reassess being vanquished at the Tanjung Piai by-election, the rakyat should continue to reject PH through the ballot box.
