PETALING JAYA: MCA has called on the Penang government to review all high-rise developments in the state to ensure a similar situation to Saturday's landslide in Tanjung Bungah will not happen again.

MCA publicity spokesman Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker (pic) said the state government "must accept responsibility for the tragedy," considering it had been repeatedly warned to stop such hillside developments.

“I call on the state government to review all other high-rise buildings and developments, approved for and under construction, and ensure that they are safe and to avoid a similar occurrence,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

On Saturday (Oct 21), tonnes of laterite earth slid down from a cut slope at the Tanjung Bungah construction site at about 8.30am burying 11 construction workers. Seven victims have been pulled out of the rubble.

Ti said that Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng should have been mindful of the dangers of hillside developments and listened to the protests of residents and environmentalists.

“To call for an official inquiry into the tragedy after the event (had occurred) is not enough.

“There must be an independent inquiry and calls for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) should be heeded, whereby the negligence, disregard and abuse by all culprits must be taken to task and penalised in accordance to the laws,” he said.
