Press statement by MCA Youth secretary-general Daniel Wa Wai How

Dr Ong Kian Ming twists words and underestimates the people’s wisdom

Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Dr Ong Kian Ming, who has won full praises of the Council of Eminent Persons chairman Tun Daim, is now as cheeky and shameless as Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.

According to Dr Ong Kian Ming, approved manufacturing FDI from China reached RM15.62 billion in the months from January to September 2018. However, the specific amount for each month was not stated, the people were only told that half of the investments were approved after Pakatan came into power. This is unconvincing and only belittles the people’s wisdom.

The Barisan Nasional helmed the federal government from January to May, while Pakatan Harapan only took over from June to September. How can the people believe that Pakatan has delivered a much splendid result as compared to Barisan Nasional? The Pakatan government must show the monthly data, instead of twisting words and fooling the people.

A Chinese friend of mine has revealed that most Chinese investors now adopt the ‘‘wait and see’’ attitude towards Malaysia. This is because Malaysia is no longer investment-friendly with many unclear policies.  Smart investors will definitely not come here to invest.

This is a testament from a mainland Chinese, and is contradicted with what Dr Ong Kian Ming claimed. If Dr Ong Kian Ming did not lie, then the PhD holder must have lost touch with reality, and failed to understand the public sentiments.

In the past, Dr Ong Kian Ming was keen of declaring data in public, but now he downgrades himself by using obscure words like ‘‘half of it’’ when addressing the public. Not even a graph or chart is shown to strengthen his statement.

Ever since the Pakatan formed the government, we can only obtain news on ways of the Pakatan government limiting foreign investments from China occasionally from the social media. But we believe such information is definitely hidden from foreign investors living outside the country.

If Dr Ong Kian Ming did grasp the correct information, he should explain explicitly with graphs or charts. This will not only convinced the people, but also the foreign investors.

I would be happy if the Chinese investors are indeed confident to invest in Malaysia. However, I hope the Pakatan government is not creating an illusion to fool the people. Stop blaming the former government as it will only drag down the country’s economy and make more people suffer.
