Amendments to Party Constitution prove MCA open to fresh ideas

A breath of fresh air envelopes MCA as the party moves in tune with the country’s political landscape after securing approval from the Registrar of Companies (ROS) on several amendments to the Party Constitution which were proposed in 2019.

As per the media statement by the MCA Secretary General Datuk Chong Sin Woon yesterday, ROS has approved several proposed amendments to the MCA Party Constitution, among them being the acceptance of Malaysians of non-Chinese descent as Affiliate Members of MCA. The MCA 66th Meeting of the Annual General Assembly (AGM) had proposed and resolved to amend the Party Constitution to accept Malaysians of non-Chinese descent to join the party as Affiliate Members.

With this amendment to the Party Constitution, it is clear that MCA is committed towards continuing the legacy of our party’s founder Tun Sir Tan Cheng Lock whereby MCA remains a Chinese-based party that fights for the rights of all Malaysians irrespective of religion and race.

MCA is an instrument of goodwill which aims to bridge harmony in society, as often expressed by MCA President Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong.  Observing the political situation today which is mired in hatred, MCA will continue striving to cultivate unity amongst our diverse communities in Malaysia.

The participation of these Affiliate Members has long existed as MCA is cognisant that our party’s supporters and voters do not consist of the Chinese community alone.  In fact, evidence of the involvement of Affiliate Members has existed since the starting of the establishment of MCA when a Malayan gentleman of Indian descent was registered as an Affiliate Member of MCA.

On the proposal to lower the minimum age of party membership to 16 years, ROS informed that this proposal is being reviewed by the Home Affairs Ministry (KDN). It is our hopes that this amendment will be approved as MCA is committed towards upholding the role of the younger generation. This reduction in the minimum age to join the party can rejuvenate the party as MCA needs thoughtful ideas, views and opinions from the next generation towards the betterment of the party for all layers of society.
