Press Statement by MCA Central Committee Member Lau Chin Kok

Time for Pakatan Selangor govt to self-reflect on the nightmarish floods of 2021

Perhaps the Pakatan Selangor state government refuses to take seriously inputs and views when they come from opposite the political gap. Then, it should heed the calls made by pro-PKR NGO Otai Reformasi 1998 to the Selangor Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) to probe the state’s flood management procedure and the State Secretary who was allegedly ‘ineffective’ in his role to prevent the recurrence of flood disasters.

As we are all aware, the floods that hit Selangor recently were absolute nightmares for the locals. Properties were damaged, and many lives were lost.

The Selangor State Secretary was accused of failing to properly take charge of the Selangor Disaster Management Unit, resulting in the slow mobilisation of assets belonging to state agencies and local authorities to flood-hit zones.

To add insult to injury, Selangor MB Dato’ Sri Amirudin Shari was clueless about the fact the Selangor Disaster Management Unit is chaired by his State Secretary. He wrongly blamed state National Security Council (MKN) chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar, who in the end, had to hold a press conference to “school” Amirudin about jurisdictions on December 22.

It is not the time for blame games. It never is. Nonetheless, the Selangor state government needs to self-reflect and rectify existing weaknesses to ensure the same predicaments would not recur again in the future.
