Press Statement by Komtar MCA Task Force Chief Tan Hing Teik

Komtar revival scheme costs hefty but results a complete failure !

Komtar MCA Task Force chief Tan Hing Teik today highlighted that the Komtar Podium is deserted. “Nearly 60% of the stores have been closed; Komtar Walk has also become a ‘Zombie Walk.’ The Komtar revival scheme by Pakatan Harapan Penang government is a complete failure!” Tan criticised.

He then pointed out that the “Podium located on the 2nd floor to the 4th floor of Komtar was the most prosperous shopping mall in Northern Region during the BN administration in the 1980s. But after Pakatan Rakyat took power in Penang in 2008, the Komtar revival scheme was pushed down.” Tan then lamented that “the stores have been closing down one by one."

Regarding the Penang Development Corporation (PDC)'s plan to buy back the Komtar podium stores, Tan alerted that such plans are “now aborted.” He revealed that, “the Penang state government had spent RM5 million to build Komtar Walk in 2010 but today it has become a ‘Zombie Walk.’” Drawing attention to the facilities which are broken, or that pools of water emerge everywhere whenever it rains, Tan bemoaned that “Komtar podium stores have lost its popularity it once had.” He next chastised the Penang state government as “utterly incompetent!”

Recalling that how Komtar had always been the pride of Penangites, Tan ruminated that “when Komtar fell into DAP hands, it has been spoofed tragically.” Disclosing the inconsistencies of the DAP-led Penang state government, Tan informed that “the Komtar revival scheme has been running for 7 years, but the business district has become more deserted day by day.”

"The state government has no ability to revive Komtar. Ultimately, they could ‘only’ spend RM200 million to find a business company to build The Top, resulting in Komtar becoming an expensive place that which general public cannot afford and thus incurred public criticism."

"It is ironic that the state government boasted of spending RM200 million to revive Komtar. Let's see how successful it is!” Tan challenged before adding that “the Rainbow Skywalk is only 17 meters but it charges RM88. Compare this figure to the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge of 430 meters in China which only charges RM89.” Demonstrating how much a family of four has to fork out to board the Rainbow Skywalk, visit all the exhibition halls, Tech Dome Penang, plus parking fee and dining expenses, Tan highlighted that “they need to pay about RM800! The Komtar revival scheme is the state government's biggest failure!"
