KUALA LUMPUR: MCA and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College have embarked on a unique project to get 60,000 palm prints stamped on a 600m mural in conjunction with the National Day celebrations.

The mural with a height of 5m is located along Jalan Genting Klang in Gombak.

MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the mural "will depict the nation's leaders including first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, and MCA and MIC founding fathers in their concerted efforts to shape the country to what it is today.

"The mural is a quick and brief history of our Independence Day and starting Aug 8, we will start getting people to put their palm prints on the wall.

"We intend to get 60,000 palm prints symbolising the 60th anniversary of independence from British rule.

"This mural is the first of its kind and will be completed by 200 students from the Arts Faculty before Aug 8," Wee told reporters at the campus here on Thursday.

Dr Wee, who is Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said the mural also "symbolises the country's multiracial citizens" and the palm prints "are proof of their patriotism and loyalty to the country."

The project's organising secretary, Datuk Yew Teong Look, said RM300,000 had been set aside for the project.

He said the money will be contributed by sponsors, and those who want to put their palm prints have to register online for a date when they can do it.

He added that he will approach the Malaysia Book of Records to include the mural in its list.
