Preparations are being made to turn a former National Service camp into a temporary shelter for the Bateq people now recovering from a mysterious illness.
Checks at the camp revealed that Civil Defence Force personnel were busy cleaning it, which is located next to Taman Etnobotani here.
The camp is about an hour’s drive from Kuala Koh Orang Asli village.
National Disaster Management Agency director of operations Datuk Azizan Abu Taat said there were 23 blocks in the camp and it could accommodate up to 400 people.
“We are in the process of cleaning it up and it will soon be ready to receive the first batch of Bateq patients from the Orang Asli convalescent home (Rika) at hospitals as soon as they have clearance to leave,” he said here yesterday.
He said the camp would be equipped with a treatment centre and doctors to monitor the health of patients recovering from their illness.
Azizan said the patients would be placed there until it was safe for them to return to Kuala Koh.
State health director Dr Zaini Hussin said 19 people were still recovering at the convalescent home in Hospital Gua Musang as of June 14.
He said four more Bateq patients were warded at the intensive care units in Hospital Kuala Krai and Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II in Kota Baru while 48 others are in normal wards.
