Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras will be installed in seven accident hotspots, including Pagoh where a fatal crash involving an express bus occurred, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

According to Sin Chew Daily, Liow said more AES cameras would be installed should there be other requests.

“The ministry will only install AES cameras based on requests from local governments, non-governmental organisations or the public.

“They are not installed on a whim by us,” he told the Chinese daily.

Liow added that apart from Pagoh in Johor, Kampar in Perak would also have one AES camera.

He said the existing 14 AES cameras were still in operation and refuted claims on social media that 200 AES cameras would be installed nationwide.

Earlier, speaking to reporters at Wisma MCA in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, Liow said the ministry managed to reduce the traffic fatality rate in the country.

The ratio, he said, had dropped from between four and five deaths per 10,000 vehicles in 2010 to 2.5 deaths now.

He added that there were 19 million cars in the country, with 400,000 to 500,000 new drivers each year.

He pointed out that the total number of deaths due to accidents was around 6,000 per year and everyone had a role to play in saving lives on the road.
