Press statement by MCA Youth Spokesperson Alex Fong Kah Wei

Frontliners’ relentless work goes unnoticed by DAP for cheap publicity

During this challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, frontliners and health personnel need all the support they can get to stay motivated as they labour tirelessly to treat patients and protect the community. Hence, it is in bad taste for the DAP official Facebook page to belittle the nation’s recovery progress and CovidNow website, as well as for DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang to regularly moan about how countries like Indonesia are doing better compared to Malaysia.

Such statements and narratives not only discourage people who are contributing towards the nation’s recovery, but they also devalue Malaysia’s capability in the eyes of the world. Furthermore, the CovidNow website is a collaborative effort of 4 passionate youngsters in the open data community and the Ministry of Health to make Covid-19 data more accessible. Their volunteerism spirit should be lauded instead of being belittled.

Constructive criticism is always welcomed, but simply questioning that “we have lost out to Indonesia” is not helpful at all. Why not Lim Kit Siang and his colleagues tell us about their contributions to national recovery?

Following his appointment as Health Minister, YB Khairy Jamaluddin has already charted out a 100-day roadmap to curb the spread of Covid-19, improve the healthcare system, and guide Malaysians into the endemic phase. Hence, it is vital for information to become easily accessible so that everyone can prepare themselves for the next step.
