YONG PENG: The town’s pedestrians-only “Yong Peng Street” along Jalan Meng Seng was abuzz with visitors sampling a variety of snacks during the two-day Yong Peng Food Festival.

Twenty stalls were setup for the festival which was launched by Ayer Hitam MP and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and Ayer Hitam MCA division chief Ling Tian Soon.

As part of the fun, the two VIPs joined about 500 attendees and chomped down on mini “dirty buns”, the latest confectionery craze in the country.

This was followed by a “dirty bun” eating competition, resulting in participants’ faces being smeared with chocolate sauce and powder, to the amusement of onlookers.

He added that the events were also an attraction for people returning for the weekend, so they could spend time with their families and friends.

The stalls saw roaring business during the event.

David Ou, who was manning the mochi and yaki onigiri (grilled rice ball) stall, was only left with pandan-flavoured mochi (Japanese rice cake) when StarMetro interviewed him.

“People still showed up even though it rained last night, so business has been good,” said Ou, who started out with several flavours, including chocolate and mango.

Kok Yoke Yuet was kept busy serving a non-stop stream of customers at her fruit-flavoured milkshake stall, many of whom came for the unique bottles she gave away with each serving of milkshake.

“There is a wide range of stalls here and I enjoyed the one selling Korean jajeong-flavoured chicken,” said Wong Sui Yi, who was at the event with a group of friends.
