BENTONG: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has urged the public to take good care of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line.

"This is a very good public transportation system for the rakyat. I urge the public to not vandalisethe  facilities at the stations," he told reporters after the Bentong District and Land Office Hari Raya open house on Tuesday.

The Bentong MP slammed the acts of vandalism that took place on the Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line in the week following its July 17 opening.

Scratches were found on specially-designed benches in at least four underground stations at Muzium Negara, Pasar Seni, Merdeka and Bukit Bintang.

Litterbugs also left behind rubbish, including cigarette butts and a broken spotlight in the station compounds, marring the image of the RM21bil public transport project.

Phase 1 of the line, from Sungai Buloh to the Semantan station in Kuala Lumpur was opened in December last year, while the second phase connecting Semantan to Kajang opened last Monday.

Commenting on the possibility of introducing the MRT system in other parts of the country, Liow said the government will focus on the MRT system in the Greater KL area.

Liow said it would take several years to complete the MRT Line 2 and MRT Line 3, which will be known as the Circle MRT Line.
