Wuzhen, China: Opining that the high-speed development of the internet had revolutionarily changed lives, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT), among others, would be the future development trends, Malaysian Minister in the Prime Minister’s  Department cum MCA Deputy President Datuk Sri Dr Wee Ka Siong urged that “entrepreneurs in Malaysia, especially newly set-ups and small and medium enterprises (SME) must get ready by now, to ride on the new trends and to master and make full use of such technological advancement in cyber world, so as to have an edge when exploring international markets.”

Representing Malaysia at the 4th World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, China, Dr Wee conveyed the above after attending the focal programme at the Conference, “World Internet Leading Technologies Wrap-Up Presentation.” Citing an example, Dr Wee said, “as the 5G era is fast approaching, internet users would soon be able to download a 2-hour movie in just minutes, and the high-speed internet era would tranform lives beyond imagination.”

“As a significant event that attracted the attention of internet technologists around the world, the China government-anchored World Internet Conference, apart from being an important platform for world players to integrate future internet development governance structure, is also a stage for internet experts to share the products of advance wisdom of the cyber world. Through the unveiling of the achievement under world internet leading technology, we are able to learn the new specialties and new trends about internet development.”

He also pointed out that, “as Malaysia’s digital economy has already developed into an important component of the national economy, the mastery and usage of new technology like AI, IoT, big data, cloud computing, virtual store, 3D printing, robots and others among the people has become important and urgent.”

Adding that “more importantly, as our younger generations possess solid basic education background,” Dr Wee also encouraged youths in Malaysia to understand and learn such internet new technology, and appreciate the innovative spirit behind the technological achievement in cyber world. “Be inspired to venture into the research, development and promotion of the internet, and make Malaysia an incubator for internet innovative technology, too”.

Dr Wee cited this World Internet Conference as an example, where aside from Jack Ma (Alibaba),  Ma Huateng (Tencent) and Robin Li (Baidu), cross-border e-business giants like Ding Lei (NetEase 136.com), Liu Qiangdong (Jingdong),  Lei Jun (Xiaomi), Wang Shutong (DHgate) and others, also shared their entrepreneurial experience  and future challenges.

“Through the sharing by these e-business experts, we can see how imagination and innovation could create much stronger forces. Many things that we have never imagined before have now become a reality as a result of technological advancement and continuous innovation,  and this phenomenon is precisely underlined by the saying in the cyber world that, ‘we don’t predict the future, we create it.’ With regard to this, I believe youths in Malaysia are not lacking in creativity. With suitable mechanism and environment, we will one day be able to see Malaysians, proudly promoting their technological achievements to the world at the World Internet Conference’s leading technology achievement presentation.”

Dr Wee who is also the Member of Parliament for Ayer Hitam also informed that “world internet leading technologies achievement presentation is a main component of the World Internet Conference helmed by Chinese Academy of engineering fellow and China Internet Association president Wu Hequan.”
