Press statement by MCA Publicity Spokesman (English/Bahasa Malaysia) cum Religious Harmony Bureau Chairman Dato’ Sri Ti Lian Ker

Is Burning the Bible OK to Pakatan Harapan now?

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad had come to the defence of Perkasa President Dato’ Seri Ibrahim Ali when the latter called for the burning of Malay language Bibles with the word “Allah” in it. That was way back on 6 February 2013 when Tun was the patron of Perkasa.

Now that Tun Dr. Mahathir is the Chairman of Pakatan Harapan and is their anointed Prime Minister to be, he or DAP (whose support is largely from among Christians) must explain or account to the electorates if he is still holding onto the same view.

The Rakyat want to know the mental make-up of the Pakatan Harapan “top-dog” and influx of Perkasa leaders now. This is the best time to seek clarification now that they are canvassing for votes before it is too late when the die is cast.

We have witnessed both Tun Dr. Mahathir and DAP Supremo Lim Kit Siang making U-turns on their political postures and principles. We know that they are consistently inconsistent but this is one U-turn or inconsistency that the people (particularly Christians) want to see or hear from Tun Dr. Mahathir.

When it comes to religious matters and the holy Bible, there are raw nerves and sensitivities that ought to be respected. It would be nice to hear that Tun Dr. Mahathir has made a U-turn to say that he no longer believes that it is alright to set the Bible ablaze under any circumstances.

MCA calls upon Pakatan Harapan or DAP to clarify or explain their Chairman’s view on this! Is it alright to set flames to the Bible? If it is okay, what are the circumstances that the Bible can be burnt?

MCA consistently and unequivocally objects to any act or proposed act of torching the Bible or any other holy books. It is utterly unacceptable and deplorable. Such behaviour is not reflective of our learned society in Malaysia.

Now, with the admission of Perkasa representatives into Pakatan Harapan, the Christians in general are concerned and interested to know the stand of DAP and PKR, especially their Christian leaders like Teresa Kok, Hannah Yeoh, etc who, interestingly have chosen to be quiet on this issue.

Is the presence of Perkasa leaders in Pakatan Harapan and former patron Tun Dr Mahathir as the Pakatan Harapan Chairman going to change the direction of Pakatan Rakyat now that they have transformed to Harapan? Is Pakatan Harapan in line with the political aspirations or expectations of those who have trusted DAP when they cast their votes for Pakatan Rakyat?
