THE Selayang parliamentary constituency and its three state seats will be exciting to watch in the 14th general election as 13,000 voters have been transferred out during the recent redelineation exercise.

These 13,000 voters were from Taman Templer state seat and had now been moved to Bukit Lanjan state seat in Damansara parliamentary constituency.

The transferred voters were from the six polling stations of Taman Daya, Taman Indah Perdana, Kepong Utara at Forest Research Institute of Malaysia, Selayang Jaya, Selayang Utama and Taman Bidara.

Selayang MCA Youth chief Chan Wun Hoong, 39, who is also the coordinator for Selayang parliamentary constituency, said state seats such as Rawang and Taman Templer looked to be winnable this time around.

Pandan MCA Youth chief Kang Meng Fuat, who is also the political secretary to MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, is said to be a potential candidate for Selayang parliamentary seat.

Kang will be among the candidates below the age of 40 if he is given the seat, as he is only 36 years old.

Selayang MP William Leong Jee Keen, who contested on a PKR ticket and won in 2013 with a majority of 17,846, may be defending his seat. He said that his work for the people would speak for itself.

“As a lawyer, I come across many cases that require legal action and help where I can,” he added.

Chan, however, thinks the contest for Selayang parliamentary seat could be in Barisan Nasional’s favour this time around.

“For the last two years, Barisan Nasional has been working on the ground tackling public complaints.

“We have solved a few public issues with the allocation from the Federal Government,” he said.

He pointed out that Kuang assemblyman Datuk Abdul Shukur Idrus had been constantly meeting his constituents.

The Selayang Umno chief won the Kuang state seat in 2008 and 2013, and there is possibility of him running for the seat again.

He garnered a majority of 1,255 votes when he won the three-cornered fight in 2013, and said that if he was fielded this year, he was confident of winning with a higher majority.

Both PKR and PAS have expressed interest to stand in Kuang in this general election.

Parti Amanah Negara Youth chief Mohd Sany Hamzan is confirmed to run for Taman Templer state seat.

PAS has also announced their candidates for the state seats in Selayang. The party will be fielding Zaidy Abdul Talib, 42, in Taman Templer, Kong Tuck Wah, 62, in Rawang and Mohd Fuazan Madzlan (PAS), 37, in Kuang.

“I welcome the challenge,” said Abdul Shukur. “Being born-and-bred in Kuang and as a resident here myself, I have always been on the ground to hear the people’s grouses and done my best to help them.

“Even if they are supporting other parties, I still help them because they are part of my village,” he added.

Chan himself has also been very active on the ground over the last one year, listening to the people’s voices. He is eyeing the Rawang state seat.

“This has been the case for all our Barisan Nasional representatives MCA, Umno and MIC in Selayang parliamentary constituency,” he said.

Two-term Rawang assemblyman Gan Pei Nei (PKR) had expressed interest to defend her state seat that she won in past consecutive general elections.
