Do not let partisanship bury morality: The 9 female Ministers & Deputies should speak up

It is appalling to lay witness on how the PH government, especially those from DAP, openly try to shelter a primary rape suspect, effectively inflicting more injustice onto the victim. To our dismay, none of the nine female Ministers and Deputies bothered enough to breathe a single word in defence of the poor woman.

Since July 10th, after Perak state exco Paul Yong was arrested for allegedly raping a young Indonesian maid, DAP’s cybertroopers, and leaders including Deputy Speaker Nga Kor Ming, repeatedly drum up their support for Yong. To further muddle the circumstances, they attempted to devise a political conspiracy theory even before the case went on trial, exposing an insipid culture of whitewashing within the party.

Preliminary police investigations had found out that the maid was indeed raped. As such, we dearly hope that the nine Ministers and Deputy Ministers — including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah, Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister in Prime Minister’s Office Fuziah Salleh, Deputy Minister of Education Teo Nie Ching,  Minister of Housing and Local Development Zuraida Kamaruddin, Minister of Rural Development Rina Harun, Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok, Minister of Energy, Green Technology, Science and Climate Change Yeo Bee Yin and her Deputy- Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis — are capable of upholding the dignity of women and safeguard justice in society.

We also request the police to not bow down to pressure and carry on the investigation with fairness to uncover the truth, dispensing justice to the wrongdoer and aggrieved alike, using it as a stepping stone to remind the society that sometimes it is a matter of morality, of what is right and wrong, that everyone is equal in the eye of the law, and not everything has to be about partisanships and politics.
