KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has congratulated Barisan Nasional candidate Ramli Mohd Noor for his win in the Cameron Highlands by-election, adding that he is looking forward to work with the latter to play an effective role by providing a check and balance in the government.

“Congratulations to Barisan Nasional candidate Ramli Mohd Noor for claiming victory in the Cameron Highlands by-election. His win is historic, as he is the very first orang asli MP in Malaysia,” he said on Saturday (Jan 26).

Dr Wee said from the very beginning, Barisan had displayed “greater flexibility and embraced diversity when identifying the candidate for this by-election”.

“This is different from Barisan’s election strategies in the past.

Dr Wee added that he hoped the Pakatan Harapan government would pay more attention to public opinion and make an effort to fulfil its promises.

“Don’t shy away from major issues and don’t make endless u-turns,” he said.

Earlier, official results released by the Election Commission (EC) showed that Ramli won by a 3,238-vote majority over Pakatan Harapan candidate M. Manogaran.

Ramli had obtained 12,038 votes, while Manogaran garnered 8,800 votes.

Independent candidates Sallehudin Ab Talib received 314 votes and Wong Seng Yee had 276 votes.

There were 568 spoilt votes.

Voter turnout was at 68.8% (21,428 voters).
